Lishi 2-in-1 Tools vs Manual Lock Pick Sets: What Are You Buying?

KW5 model-specific 2-in-1 pick and decoder tool

A Lishi 2-in-1 tool and a pouch of ordinary lock picks can sit in the same kit, but they are different purchases. One is made around a particular lock profile and combines picking with decoding. The other is an assortment of separate picks and tension tools.

If you are comparing the two, start with what you need the kit for. A known cylinder specification points you toward a particular model. A practice setup calls for a closer look at the manual tools and training locks included in the box.

What does “2-in-1” actually mean?

The two functions are picking and decoding. The name does not mean two tools in the package, and it does not mean the tool fits two different keyways.

Take our KW1 2-in-1 tool. Its listing is for a compatible Kwikset KW1 5-pin application. The KW5 tool is a separate listing for a compatible KW5 6-pin application. Both are called 2-in-1; the model code tells you which application to check.

That distinction is easy to miss when several tools look almost identical in a shopping result. Read the model marking and the written specification together. “For Kwikset” on its own is too broad to settle the choice.

What is different about a manual pick set?

A manual set contains separate tools in different shapes. It may also come with tension wrenches, a case or practice locks. Those extras matter when you compare the contents, because the number in the title is not always the number of picks.

For example, our 25-piece practice kit counts 12 picks, five tension wrenches, a five-piece compact set and three transparent training locks. It is not 25 picks with three locks added on top.

The contents list explains what the piece count includes.

A clear practice lock lets you see its internal mechanism. It is a teaching aid, though: a demonstration on that lock does not establish that the same assortment will suit a particular installed cylinder.

Which purchase makes sense for you?

If you are replacing a model-specific tool you already use, buy by the full model code and version. There is little reason to add an unrelated assortment just because it has more pieces.

If you want a manual practice kit, compare the actual tool assortment and whether training locks are included. A single KW1 decoder is a different product; it should not be treated as a substitute for that whole setup.

If you need several residential profiles, compare a bundle that names each one. Our residential bundles have selected two-, three- and four-tool options. Choose the option before adding it to the cart. A group photo showing KW1, KW5, SC1 and SC4 does not mean every option includes all four.

Read these details before comparing prices

  • The complete model code. Keep any suffix or version number when you compare listings.
  • The stated application. Match the actual keyway and configuration, rather than the brand on the door hardware.
  • The package contents. Count the named tools, accessories and training locks separately.
  • The delivered total. Compare the selected option and shipping, not a headline price for a different option.

At Lockly, standard shipping is US$6.99 to supported destinations. Merchandise subtotals of US$99.99 or more after discounts qualify for free standard shipping, excluding taxes and shipping from that threshold. Check our delivery terms and return policy before ordering. Extra tools are only a saving if you need them.
